| When it Rains, it Floods - TWICE! During the summer of 2004, a family in the Niagara Peninsula suffered two such floods from "cloudbursts" that occurred within four weeks of each other.
Due to a new housing development in the area of the home and inadequate drainage culverts, the fully finished basement was totally flooded on July 31. After cleanup and considerable restoration work in the basement, a second, equally devastating downpour on August 28 again flooded the home and destroyed all the work that had been done. Total damage for both floods was in excess of $60,000. To make matters even more complicated, the insurance contract limits coverage for flooding to $15,000 per incident. But ..with many hours of volunteer labour from neighbours and the faith community, combined with more than $15,000 of assistance Mutual Aid Ministries extended to this family, the financial crisis created by circumstances over which they had no control, was greatly diminished.
